Árni M. Mathiesen brings a wealth of experience from national governance to global ocean sustainability. Born in Iceland in 1958, Árni is a veterinary scientist by training, holding degrees from the University of Edinburgh (BVM&S) and the University of Stirling (M.Sc. in Aquatic Veterinary Science). His early career focused on aquatic animal health, including roles in general practice, fish disease management, and as Managing Director of Faxalax Fish Farm.

From 1991 to 2009, Árni served as a Member of the Icelandic Parliament, including two ministerial posts—first as Minister of Fisheries (1999–2005), then as Minister of Finance (2005–2009). Following his political career, he held a decade-long leadership role at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations as Assistant Director-General and Head of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, continuing as a Special Advisor on Oceans into 2020.

Today, Árni plays a key role in multiple initiatives focused on sustainable oceans and aquaculture. He is Senior Advisor at the Iceland Ocean Cluster, Independent Chair of the Global Round Table on Marine Ingredients, and a board member of both the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) and the Iceland Aquaculture and Oceans Forum. His leadership extends to chairing the environmental and cultural fund Kvískerjasjóður and previously serving as Chairman of the Board for Transport for the Capital Area Plc.
